İçmeler is a holiday resort only 8 km. from Marmaris within a municipality of its own. İçmeler bay is within Marmaris Bay. The town is surrounded on three sides by pine forests. Hiking on the mountains provides fantastic views of the region and is very popular.

The town has developed rapidly in the last 15 years, accommodation and other tourist facilities mushrooming across the formerly sleepy fishermen's and sponge divers' village, thus putting it in direct competition with Marmaris, on which it depends in many respects. Also, this village in the Turkish Riviera has an increasing amount of watersports facilities, such as; scuba diving, waterskiing and many others.

The town's development is mainly due to early discoverers who came here as of the 1970s and who spread the word on İçmeler as a quieter alternative to Marmaris. Some of these pioneers have visited İçmeler annually for decades and have virtually become natives, such as Maureen Liversidge, known as "İçmeler'in Annesi" (İçmeler's Mummy ~ İçmeler's Queen) a regular at The Laughing Starfish Restaurant, which is reputed to prepare the best tiramisu in town. Some of the other favoured restaurants are, Deniz Kapısı Karaoke Bar, Artemis, Love Boat and Café Ann to name a few.
