Ramses Railway Station, Cairo, Egypt

Maps, Virtual Earth / Nearest placesRamses Railway Station (Mahattat Ramses) is the main railway station of Cairo, Egypt and faces Ramses Square (Midan Ramses). The name is derived from the Ancient Egyptian pharaohs, Ramses II whose statue was erected by Nasser on the square in 1955. Ramses Square had been formerly called Bab Al-Hadid Square, and Ramses Station used to be called Misr Station.
The original railway station was built as the terminal of the first raillink from Alexandria to Cairo in 1856. The current building was erected in 1892 and upgraded in 1955.
The statue of Ramses II was relocated to near the Giza Plateau on August 25, 2006.

The current building was built in 1893 and replaced two earlier stations that served as separate termini for the Great Southern and Western Railway called Glanmire, directly in front of the portal of the tunnel through which the railway into Cork passed, and the Cork and Youghal Railway terminus which was above the tunnel portal. Its purpose was to allow through running of trains following the 1865 takeover of the Cork and Youghal Railway by the Great Southern and Western Railway. The station was originally called Glanmire Road Station, but was renamed Kent Station in 1966 on the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising. The station served as a filming location for the 1979 movie The First Great Train Robbery starring Sean Connery, Donald Sutherland and Lesley-Anne Down.
Pasila railway station, Helsinki, Finland

It is the second busiest railway station in Finland, after Helsinki Central, and takes up a large part of the district of Pasila. The station was first opened in 1862.
Pasila station is used to ease the congestion on the city's central station by serving as an alternate point of departure or arrival within Helsinki. All trains, both long-distance and local, travelling to and from Helsinki stop at Pasila.
