It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of Fortaleza Esporte Clube and Ceará Sporting Club. The stadium holds 22,228 people and was built in 1941. The stadium is owned by the Fortaleza City hall, and it is named after Brazilian president Getúlio Vargas.
The stadium was constructed to be the largest stadium in Fortaleza. Only after the inauguration of the Castelão stadium, in 1971, Estádio Presidente Vargas was surpassed.
In 1941, the works on Estádio Presidente Vargas were completed. The inaugural match was played on September 21 of that year, when Ferroviário beat Tranmways of Pernambuco 1-0. The first goal of the stadium was scored by Ferroviário's Chinês.
The stadium's attendance record currently stands at 38,515, set in 1989 when Fortaleza and Ceará drew 1-1.
