Wells Fargo Plaza, Houston, USA

May 5th, 2006 / / Links: Google Earth, Google Maps, Yahoo! Maps, Virtual Earth / Nearest places

The Wells Fargo Bank Plaza, formerly the Allied Bank Plaza and First Interstate Bank Plaza, is located in downtown Houston, Texas.

This building is the 11th Tallest Building in the United States, and the second tallest building in Texas and Houston, after Houston's JPMorgan Chase Tower.

The building was built at 1000 Louisiana Street in 1983. It was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Lloyd Jones Brewer and Associates and supposedly resembles an abstracted dollar sign in plan. The shape creates extreme wind stress, twisting the building violently in storms. In 1983 the building lost a large number of windows during Hurricane Alicia.

From street level, this building is 71 stories tall, or 970 feet (296 m) tall. But it extends four more stories below street level, with a subterranean (but open-air) plaza.

The John Hancock Center at 875 N. Michigan Ave. in Chicago, Illinois is a one-hundred-story, 1,127 ft. (344 m)-tall skyscraper designed by structural engineer Fazlur Khan of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and, when completed in 1969, was the tallest building in the world outside of New York City. It is the third tallest skyscraper in Chicago and the fourth largest in the United States, after the Sears Tower, Aon Center and Empire State Building. The building is home to offices and restaurants, as well as more than 700 condominiums and contains the highest residences in the world. The first residential lease for the Hancock building was signed by Benjamin Gingiss who lived in the building until his death.

The 95th floor has long been home to a fine restaurant, the latest incarnation being called "The Signature Room on the 95th Floor." While patrons dine, they can look out the windows overlooking Chicago and Lake Michigan. One of the best views of the city can be seen from the restaurant's ladies' restroom. Oftentimes men are invited in to see the view. The Hancock Center's observation facilities compete with the Sears Tower's Skydeck across town. The Hancock Center is located in a commercial district, while the Sears Tower is located in the financial district. The Hancock Center 94th floor observation deck displays exhibits about the city of Chicago. Maps explain the view in each direction and a special meshed in area allows the visitors to feel the winds 1,000 feet (305 m) above ground level. On the 44th floor, there is a skylobby containing America's highest indoor swimming pool.
